A smoother wall or ceiling can change how a room reads, especially around large windows and long sightlines. Skim coating is a surface-preparation scope—not simply a thicker coat of paint. The existing substrate, the amount of leveling and the planned lighting guide the finish discussion.

Start with a sound surface
Existing texture, damaged areas, adhesion and previous coatings must be reviewed before deciding whether to skim, remove material or replace sections of board. Painting over an unsuitable base does not resolve the underlying problem.

Agree on the finish under real lighting
Window light across a wall, ceiling fixtures and glossy paint can emphasize surface variation. Identify the lighting and sheen before work. If you request a Level 5 finish, have the exact preparation and finish specification written into the proposal rather than treating the term as a blanket perfection guarantee.

Compare the full sequence
Repair, surface preparation, coating passes, drying, sanding, primer and paint are separate parts of the plan. Discuss dust control, room protection and access between stages. A smooth-finish quote should identify where the work stops and which surfaces receive final paint.

Can you smooth an existing textured wall?+
It can be considered after the existing surface and coating adhesion are reviewed. The amount of texture, damage and leveling affects the proposed approach.
Does skim coating include ceiling texture removal?+
Not automatically. Removal, assessment of suspect materials and ceiling refinishing must be identified separately when they are needed.
Can I keep some textured surfaces?+
Yes. Specify the rooms and surfaces to change, plus the corners, trim and transition points where the new finish meets the existing one.
